| Intake and exhaust systems are generally the first place to start looking for power gains. Most OEM systems must comply with strict emissions & noise levels (including induction noise). A well built exhaust, combined with a free flowing intake with cold air flow can produce great results. Turbo cars in particular will respond well to these types of modifications. A full tune,including a chemical injector flush, new plugs, new fuel filter, and a check of the oxygen sensor should be included in any upgrade. Replacement camshafts can help unleash the full potential of your engine improvements. Better exhaust and intake flow means more power. The correct camshaft/s, fitted and timed correctly, can produce excellent results. |
| A turbo upgrade can result in excellent power increases, when combined with an engine that is in good shape with a good intake & exhaust. A boost controller can create good power gains with a stock turbo on a smaller budget. Intercoolers can produce power gains for turbocharged engines, with air to air being the most popular, but don't rule out a well set up water to air system, especially for short-track racing such as 1/4 mile drags.For non-turbo cars, nitrous oxide creates instant horsepower, and correctly set up does no more harm to an engine than a turbo, assuming the engine is in good shape to begin with! |
| Once power increases are stepped up, keep in mind that the stock engine under all the bolt on's may exceed it's mechanical limits. For serious power increases, most engines require a rebuild with stronger internal parts, such as conrods & forged pistons, and some means of tuning such as a "plug & play" ECU or a "piggy back" fuel controller.If absolute maximium power is what you hope to achieve, then cylinder head porting, larger valves, and flow testing will be on the cards.
